ICSC RECON Las Vegas 2010

It was our first trip to Las Vegas for the International Council for Shopping Centers annual trade show though some of our collegues have been going for several years.  Our immediate impression was being amazed at the pure size of the show yet how organized and easy to find everything was.  In the past we have spent up to 45 minutes simply trying to locate our booth such as a few years back at the AIA convention in San Antonio.  With each aisle having a street name it was easy to navigate.

The booths were amazing particularly the waterfall at Jones Lang LaSalle that greeted visitors by spelling out sentences when one walked through the central hall doors.

The general session featured notable speakers including Sarah Palin who joked about losing her luggage and obtaining more at a local shopping mall on her way to the convention.  Secretary of Labor Robert Reich gave an excellent presentation on the state of the economy and the future.  His interesting narrative on globalization and demographics shed further light on the slow recovery.

We also enjoyed listening to a breakout session on sustainable LEED retorfits hosted by Pamela Lippe of E4 consulting in New York and featuring such notable people as Jeff Bedell from Macerich and Jason Kraus of Best Buy's construction division.  All 6 panelists spoke at length on what they've done to retrofit existing building to LEED standards and how it has paid off.  Notable was that white roofing didn't enter the conversation until the very end and only because we brought it up!  The most talked about portion of retrofits was HV/AC and lighting.

We mingled with fellow Duro-Last alum including west coast operations vice president Tim Hart and national sales manager John Deal who worked tirelessly at the Duro-Last booth in the central hall.  Capping our trip was a visit to Minus 5 ice bar located in Mandalay Bay where we paid $25 to stand in a freezing room for 15 minutes - and loved it!  And a delicious feast on awesome seafood at Hot & Juicy just off the strip and featured recently on Man versus Food.

All in all it was a great trip.  Next year we plan to organize meetings with local property managers while at the show to make even better use of our time!  Now on to the next one .... BOMA Los Angeles in 3 weeks ....
